Team Depot Make Significant Improvements to Veterans' Home

SHREVEPORT, La. (November 11, 2015) – Orange shirts took over the Veterans Transitional Living Facility Nov. 10, as more than 100 Team Depot volunteers participated in Veterans Day projects, including landscaping, painting and building renovations.

This effort in Shreveport is a part of The Home Depot’s fifth-annual Celebration of Service campaign, during which Team Depot volunteers put their talents to work to transform more than 1,000 homes for veterans across the country from Sept. 11 to Veterans Day.

The Veterans Transitional Living Facility, owned by Volunteers of America North Louisiana, is a 56-bed facility, located on the corner of Jordan Street and Highland Street that provides the basics of shelter, food and supportive services to help veterans transition from being without a home into independent living.

Volunteer projects throughout the day included:

  • General clean-up and remodeling of the laundry room
  • Making landscaping improvements
  • Screening in the patio area

“What I like about working with Volunteers of America is The Home Depot values and their values are the same,” said Jack Parker, store manager. “When we do these projects, we bring the values to life and give hope to our communities and veterans.”

Community partners, Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and U.S. Air Force volunteers, also joined the workday. The entire atmosphere was fun and uplifting. As loud music played, fresh coats of paint applied, and flowers planted, the home is now completely renovated for veterans to enjoy their new space.

Craig, a resident of the Veterans Transitional Living Facility, was so warmed by the volunteer’s willingness to help veterans like him on their day off work. “I decided to pick up a paint brush and help too,” said Craig. “This is all very nice.”
