Center is one of the first new senior care facilities to open since Minnesota’s nursing home moratorium
ANOKA, Minn., February 27, 2013 – Volunteers of America, one of the nation’s oldest and largest providers of supportive housing to seniors, opened the landmark Anoka Rehabilitation and Living Center, moving in the first 81 residents on Feb. 26.
The new 120-bed skilled care center, located at 3000 4th Avenue in Anoka, is one of the first facilities of its kind to open in Minnesota since the state instituted a moratorium on new nursing homes more than two decades ago. Volunteers of America received a special exemption to build the new facility, which replaces the 40-year-old Anoka Care Center on Madison Street. The opening of the campus creates 66 new full- and part-time jobs in the Anoka community, in addition to preserving the existing 160 positions transferring from Anoka Care Center.
The Homestead at Anoka was designed to meet the needs and desires of a new generation of older adults who require the services of a nursing home but want to live in a more homelike environment. Most of the rooms are single-person occupancy with private bathrooms and showers. The rooms provide more square footage than is found in similar care centers, and are grouped in smaller “households” of 20 rooms each.
In addition to serving long-term residents, Anoka Rehabilitation and Living Center offers specialized care and services for those needing nursing care for shorter periods, such as the weeks following surgery, and secured memory care for persons with cognitive impairment.Volunteers of America is a major provider of professional long-term care, including assisted living, home health care and nursing home care. The organization operates 25 health care facilities for seniors throughout the United States, with the first opening in Minnesota in 1970.
Anoka Rehabilitation and Living Center is connected to The Homestead at Anoka, a senior living community of apartment homes offering independent and assisted living. Campus amenities include a general market, fitness rooms, hairstyling salon, club lounge, chapel and private dining room. The campus provides additional room for future expansion as needed.
A public grand opening reception for The Homestead at Anoka campus is planned for May 16, 2013.
