The “Thank You” Melanie Needed

Like many veterans who have courageously served our country, Melanie came home expecting honor, dignity and the chance to build a new life with her two children. Instead she found unexpected hardships.

Suddenly laid off from her new job right in the middle of the holidays, she simply could not give her kids the Christmas they wished for. “I was angry and afraid for my children,” Melanie said. “After the rent, utilities, and common household needs were met, I knew I would not be in a position to do anything extra for my kids at Christmas. It was difficult to think about the holiday season.”

But just one “thank you” from some of Melanie’s neighbors gave her new hope for the future. Melanie heard about Adopt-A-Family, Volunteers of America Michigan’s special holiday program through a friend. She was accepted into the program and received toys and a grocery gift card from local donors.

“My family was so grateful,” she said. “The toys and grocery gift card went a long way in helping us have a happy holiday. This experience was one that I will never forget.”

The generosity of neighbors she’d never met ended up providing so much more than gifts and a warm meal—they gave Melanie and her family hope. Thank you to all our supporters who allow us to give veterans and their families in need the holiday and dignity they deserve.
